The Amazing Race 2023
With 26 teams competing it was our largest race to date. For 4-5 hours our contestants tested their skills, knowledge and abilities throughout the Beaches of 59 competing against one another to see who will be this years champs … Below you can view our gallery of images from this years event.
Thank you to all our great sponsors and volunteers. Without you the event would not have been the success it was! We can not wait to see you all in 2024 for next years event.
An Amazing Day was had by 104 Racers Through the Beaches of 59
On August 12th, 2023, the “Beaches of 59 Amazing Race” took place for the second time. Starting at The Birchwood Hotel, and ending at Grand Maris Community Central and RV Park, the day was full of fun activities and challenges! 26 teams of 4 entered this years’ race and travelled through several beach communities. Each team had to complete tasks such as deciphering an order of baked goods from a Morse Code recording at the Village Green Bakery, performing a pool noodle commercial at the Victoria Beach Clubhouse, kayaking and relaying Chinese symbols to their team mates on Hillside Beach, matching the English names to Ojibway names of fish at the new Traverse Bay Boat Launch, filling bags of dirt at Freestyle Landscaping, solving a murder mystery at Grand Palms Resort and RV Park and much more! Throughout the day teams completed 15 challenges and encountered the PASS board, where teams could force their fellow competitors to wait for the team behind them. The twist made teams more competitive to compete tasks faster and be strategic as to who they should make wait.
The Champions finished the race in exactly 3 hours and 10 minutes! Perry and The Platypuses took home the win for a second year in a row! Teams congratulated each other, and watched their friends and fellow competitors cross the Base Camp 59 sponsored Finish Line in Grand Maris. 2nd place was 8 minutes behind 1st and 3rd was only 1 minute behind 2nd. The 5th place team arrived at 3:38 (28 minutes behind the Champions).

The race route and challenges were put together by Andrew Kaul as part of his summer employment with Beaches of 59. Andrew has now successfully executed five Amazing Races and his second with Beaches of 59. He was assisted by Laura Kemp (volunteer with Beaches of 59, and local real estate appraiser), and Lexi Verras (also a summer employee with Beaches of 59). It takes many hours to plan and execute an event like this, but they all had fun doing so!
The race would not be able to take place without all the amazing volunteers at each stop or challenge. The entire Beaches of 59 volunteer committee (Garry Marshall, Michelle Wazny, Steve Boyd, Lise Bourassa, Carol Danwich, Laura Kemp, and Donna Whalley) were in attendance at the event, and family and friends volunteered to assist on race day. Each volunteer had a unique opportunity to support the racers at their challenge and make the event difficult but fun. Thank you for helping with this amazing event!
Hopefully we will see you at the starting line next year!
